Hartland Hedge Survey - XArch

It is intended to conduct a basic survey of the hedges closely associated with the study areas. If time and manpower permit then this may be extended to other areas within the parish to use as comparatives.

The recording will generally be as that already undertaken at Parracombe and based on the system devised by Johnson and Rose (1994) and the former Cornwall Archaeology Units survey sheet as described in Martin Gillards thesis.

Two pro forma documents have been used to collect the data, the first a simple type based on measurement and a second with space for extended data recording.
These can be downloaded here Short Doc: Extended Doc.
Please feel free to amend to suit your own circumstances.

below is an example of the data extracted from a short survey sheet and placed into M/S Excel:
(Note Codes are incorrect on this sample)

Overview of the Stoke Barton Estate; OS numbers marked with Tithe numbers in brackets

There are three important question to be addressed; First can we, as at Parracombe, establish any development sequence of the estate from the boundaries? Secondly we establish how this estate compares with other farms also owned by the monastic household and thirdly is there evidence of a clearance either very early or c.18th Century?
